Report: Field Trip to KSNP - Discover Mangroves (CAKE06)

By HY Leong

OF all the Climate Action Kids Engagement (CAKE) field trips, this one to Kuala Selangor Nature Park (KSNP) was the most costly - from rentals to catering, park staff and planting material. So we were elated that our application to the Selangor State Government's Geran Kecil Alam Sekitar (Environmental Small Grants) 2023 programme was successful!

The small grant however was not in time for the July 1st field trip to KSNP (CAKE05) due to the grant application being extended, hence the results were also extended. After seven months of preparation, CAKE05 was cancelled due to low turnout that wasn't sufficient to cover costs. With the grant in hand, we were finally able to invite MNS kids and their parents for a fully paid field trip to KSNP on 19th November 2023.

18th November 2023 (Saturday)

Three CAKE mentors from MNS Selangor Branch committee and two CAKE mentors from MNS Selangor Branch Nature Guides special interest group arrived at Kuala Selangor to set-up the tables and chairs in the Multi-purpose Hall and test out the presentation. Travelling from Johor Bahru and Seremban were the Marine Group coordinator and a committee member, who made it in time for dinner beside the hotel that overlooks the Selangor River. After dinner, the volunteer mentors prepared the habitat worksheets for over two hours for the next day's climate change session.

19th November 2023 (Sunday)

Members began trickling in from 7.15am and were quickly checked-in as we had a fully packed programme until lunch time. Four parents and kids arrived late (towards the end of the session of how climate change affects mangroves) and one parent didn't turn up. In total, there were 23 member participants, 7 volunteer mentors, and 1 park mentor. We thanked one member who made a donation at the end of the field trip. Two weeks later, a report of the field trip was submitted to the Selangor State Government with the relevant photographs and receipts.

We wish to thank MNS Secretariat for also supporting MNS Selangor Branch's Climate Action Kids Engagement Trial Programme at KSNP.
