Report: Raptor Watch Trip @ Chumphon
Seventeen MNS Selangor Branch Bird Group members witnessed the breath-taking spectacle of raptors in their annual autumn migration from 21-26th October 2023. Organised by Wong Shea Hong, it was an exciting expedition to Chumphon, Thailand, renowned for its prime location for observing migratory raptors.
The trip aimed to witness the impressive spectacle of thousands of raptors as they journey southward during their annual migration. Khao Dinsor and Khao Radar in Chumphon Province, on the Thai-Malay Peninsula, is a globally important monitoring site for southbound migratory raptors using the East Asian Continental Flyway.
Jaw dropping moments were observed from the several scenic viewpoints at Khao Dinsor with continuous flocks of Oriental Honey Buzzards, Gray-faced & Buteo Buzzards, Black & Jerdon’s Bazas, Booted Eagles, Shikras, Accipiters, Black Kites, Crested Serpent Eagles, Bee eaters and many other species.
We had the opportunity to meet some renowned local bird experts including Dr Chaiyan Kasorndorkbua, Kasetsart University, Department of Pathology to share their invaluable knowledge of the raptors passing through and above.
