Branch Talk: Macro Photography by Mr. Ken Voon

Member's Report
By HY Leong

The Macro Photography by Mr Ken Voon held in conjunction with the MNS Selangor Branch trip to Pulau Tioman pre-trip briefing was attended by 15 out of 21 members who registered. Two members sent their apologies as they were unwell.

Branch Trip organisers HY Leong, Grace Chin and Joseph Lee were also in attendance. After HY Leong thanked Mr Woo of YL Camera for hosting the venue for the talk and pre-trip briefing, HY introduced Ken Voon.

Ken shared what type of macro photography gear he uses and how he approaches his subjects. He then shared with members some of his macro shots, with ample time for questions and to try out the Olympus HDSLR. As the session had already overrun by 20 minutes, we invited Ken and non-Tioman-bound members to continue the discussion outside the meeting room.

After HY briefed members about MNS Selangor's presence in Pulau Tioman - beginning with Marine Special Interest Group's Eco-friendly Snorkelling in 2003 and later MNS Selangor's Tioman Island Fest in 2006 and 2007, we have not been back to Tioman for at least a decade.

This time round, we are collaborating with Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) and Moby-Tek Dive Centre (Green Fins) and local groups e.g. Tioman Marine Conservation Group and Ari's Activity Centre. There are four programmes running concurrently - three programmes for divers - RCM's Eco-Diver course, PADI Open Water course and fun divers, and the last programme for non-divers - nature photography from sea to summit. HY thanked Mr Julian Hyde, the General Manager of Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) for attending the pre-trip briefing.

Julian introduced Reef Check Malaysia and how RCM engages with the local stakeholders to protect and conserve not only the coral reefs but also the island's plastic and glass waste problems.

After the engaging half hour presentation by Julian which helped to establish the context and framework of our programmes on the island over 4 nights 5 days, we proceeded with the pre-trip briefing - programme logistics, payment of own food, and the belated International Coastal Cleanup Day area to be cleaned. After the pre-trip briefing, two family members pulled out citing a busy schedule, leaving 16 members to proceed to Tioman.
